With the rate of divorce and remarriage so high these days, there's a good chance they could meet a parent at a time.
Let me offer some tips for being a stepparent:
Always remember that the child has both a mom and a dad. By age of children entering their lives, there are rules and guidelines already established a good chance. It will help you and your child if you Support the current rules versus trying to create new rules.
Encourage the child (ren) to invoke his name. Unless circumstances are such that you will adopt the child at a very young age and the other parent is not involved, do not confuse and harm the child waiting to be called Mom or Dad. If a child chooses to call Mom or Dad is fine, but until then encouraged to be called by its name.
Talk to your child about how they wish to be introduced. I have a friend with a child by step and I knew it was a "step" until very recently. Not distinguished from other children. He referred to all children as "children" and having all my children ". I have seen other parents say "this is my daughter Amy and this is my stepdaughter Cindy. "Why make the distinction, unless the child specifically asked that?
Do not speak ill children, another relative low under any circumstances. He put the child on the defensive and is consumed in the child itself whenever it is worth to a father who according to them belong.
Encourage your children not to spend time alone, not only with your spouse, but also their other parent. The more a child sees his support these relationships, the happier the child is and will be seen more as an ally not an enemy.
Step Parenting is not easy and the family may require the assistance of a neutral party as a family counselor. Be willing to work hard on the relationship between you and your children step. Be ready to listen and be prepared to make changes that will make life more enjoyable for the whole family together.
