Should I give gifts to throw my baby shower?

This is my first pregnancy so obviously I have never had a baby shower. Should I buy a gift for guests, and if so what is an appropriate gift? A thank you card does not appear really cut for guests, but guests certainly get a thank you card.

I just want to give a word of thanks. They throw the shower not trying to get something from you. Good luck, congratulations and have fun in the shower!
