Finally, you have reached the stage of labor and delivery! Let’s talk about the different stages of labor (yes, it’s divided into stages, and there are three of them!). It will help you to know of them in this crucial phase of pregnancy.
The First Stage Of Labor
The first stage is further divided into three phases.
PHASE I – it is known as early labor. It can last from hours to days. You will start getting regular contractions, which is different from Braxton-Hicks contractions. This is the real thing and gets severe, as your cervix starts dilating. However, it’s not time yet to go to the hospital. Just consult your doctor. Remember, do not eat any stuff unless your doctor says ‘yes’ for particular reasons. But, you should drink plenty of water in all stages of labor.
PHASE II – it is known as active labor. It is a shorter phase lasting for about 3-4 hours. But, mind you, it’s more severe than the first phase! Your cervix dilates more and spotting will increase. In this phase, you will experience water break. Now is the time to go to the hospital. But, don’t panic. Your baby still has time to come out. Remember, labor and delivery is not as fast a process as shown in movies and television.
Let your partner give you a good massage or feed you ice chips to relax you. Some women may like to be alone during this phase.
PHASE III – it is known as transition period. It lasts for a few hours. You experience acute pain, as your cervix gets dilated completely. You might feel sweaty and exhausted in this phase. You will get an urge to push; however, your doctor will advise you against it. This can cause more irritability. If you start pushing early, you will prolong the delivery process and cause unnecessary exertion on your body. Hence, relax, breathe easy, and do not push.
The Second Stage Of Labor
The pain is at its peak in the second stage. You will get more blood in spotting. The good thing about this horrible stage is that it lasts for a very short time. At last, your doctor will ask you to start pushing! Let the process of labor and delivery take its natural course. Do not meddle with it. Do as your doctor says. Continue deep breathing and keep a calm mind. Within a couple of hours, your baby will be out!
The Third Stage Of Labor
Your baby is delivered, but you still continue to get contractions for another half hour. This is because your uterus will remove the placenta. After this is over, you have passed the labor and delivery phase with success. You are now a mom, congratulations!
