An exercise program for a pregnant woman? Yes, a sensible fitness program designed with a doctor’s approval is a very good idea, indeed! A routine, moderate exercise program can help prevent excessive weight gain during pregnancy, making a woman feel better and stay healthier.

Fitness programs for pregnant women are designed to help a woman build stamina for the delivery room. Besides strengthening muscles, the increased oxygen to the internal organs will definitely be appreciated during delivery. Just imagine how your heart and lungs will thank you during labor! It is also known that increased blood flow during exercise affects the brain’s activity, as well. You will be more alert and have a sense of well-being as your brain takes in all that healthy oxygen you’re providing it during your fitness routine. All this is essential to a healthy body and mind during the delivery, recovery, and for a long time after.

Postpartum depression is a worry for most pregnant woman. We have discovered that, while there is no magic cure, staying physically active can help. Increased blood flow through exercise improves the cognitive thought process. You feel better and think better. Choosing a fitness program that you do with a community of women may also help you emotionally get through the stressful months ahead.

Now comes the part where you talk to your doctor. Of course, you don’t start any exercise program without consulting your doctor first. Once that’s done, choose a fit program or programs that suit you and let’s get going! Let’s just check out a few basic exercise programs here:

Walking – With a good pair of walking shoes and comfortable clothing, a simple 30 minute walk can do wonders for your body, mind, and soul. Be sure to walk in a well lit area where the surface is smooth and even. Some pregnant women prefer walking early mornings in a mall or at a school track. Walk with someone or in a public place in case you need to ask for help.

Swim – You know that whole water and gravity thing? Well, some pregnant women swear by swimming for exercise because it lightens the load they’ve been carrying around on their hips, spine, back, and of course, their bladder. Being suspended in the water allows easier movement and the resistance of the water is usually enough to get a good workout if you paddle around with your legs and arms. You can also do specific exercises designed for the water, and use special pool weights, too.

Yoga and Pilates – These low impact style of exercises can be very helpful. Be sure to follow the beginners instructions very carefully and avoid any movement that seems stressful. Take some time to search the extensive exercise videos and books that feature programs specifically designed for pregnant women. Just be sure to consult with your physician before beginning this, as well as any, exercise program.

Sports – Participating in sports can be considered a fitness program. However, some sports should be avoided during pregnancy, such as anything that involves a fast ball, sprinting, and tackling. For instance, baseball, tennis, racquetball, and football should be observed from the sidelines for the time being for obvious reasons – you don’t want to be hit by a ball or knocked down. Once your baby is safely born, you can get back in gear. But, until then, you’ve got a little passenger that needs a safe ride.

It’s time to choose a couple exercise programs. I say a couple because most women get bored doing the same exercise over and over. And, being pregnant, you may have to alter your program as the months go by. One month you may just love to get out and walk, but towards the end, you may find it very stressful on your back and need to change to a no-impact exercise. Moving to a belly dancing video during the first half of your pregnancy may be really fun, but stretching out in yoga positions may feel better during the second half. Mix up your routine a little, once you’ve gotten your doctor’s approval, again!

A good fitness program while you’re pregnant may be one of the best things you can do for yourself. Not only are you providing your body with the strength and stamina needed for the delivery, but you’re providing your mind with some much needed stress relief! Your unborn child deserves the healthiest mom, both physically and emotionally, that he or she can get. Make an appointment with your doctor today to discuss a fitness program. Then choose a couple exercise programs and begin. You owe it to yourself and your baby.

And All Of A Sudden, We Were Pregnant http://www.9monthsandafter.com/and-all-of-a-sudden-we-were-pregnant/ http://www.9monthsandafter.com/and-all-of-a-sudden-we-were-pregnant/#comments Sat, 12 May 2012 12:26:26 +0000 Damian Papworth http://www.9monthsandafter.com/and-all-of-a-sudden-we-were-pregnant/

The night we found out we were pregnant with our first was one of those few moments in my life that I will never forget. Before that moment, I’d never have imagined that one little test would leave such an impression on my life, but it did. My spouse and I were pregnant, we had embarked on a new adventure of joint purpose, of family.

We live on Australia’s Gold Coast. Moving here was a decision we made together, moving away from our families early 2007 in favor for a beach lifestyle. As such, we often have our families visit us for weekends or weeks at a time, staying in our spare room. It really is one of the joys of living at a tourist destination.

At the start of 2008, we had my parents staying with us for a week. It was during this week we started to think we may have a little, unplanned bundle of joy on the way. For better or worse, we waited till mum and dad had left before we got that test.

On purchasing a pregnancy test, an amusing series of events unfolded. My partner ducked out into the bathroom and urinated on the stick as per the directions. Having done so, all courage departed and she ran into the living room, buried herself under a pillow and hid from it. She demanding that I go and find out what it had to tell us.

I spent a minute composing myself and having gotten my laughter under control, I went into the bathroom to check the little stick. We were pregnant, our first was on its way. Returning to the lounge, I gathered my wife in my arms and murmured, “We’re going to be parents sweetheart”.

At this moment she point blank accused me of lying, telling me she didn’t believe a word I said and ran into the bathroom to see for herself. It was pretty funny! This was a great introduction to our first pregnancy as those initial magical moments can only be described by the word “roller-coaster”. Which is exactly what the next 8 months or so turned out to be.

The rest of the night was simply wonderful. We spent at least an hour in the bathroom looking at the little stick, staring at each other in amazement, murmuring quietly “we are going to be parents”, “you are going to be a mum”, “you are going to be a dad” and the like. Despite the tumultuous beginning, it turned into an evening of softness, joy and intimacy. An experience that never would have been the same if it was shared with others. An experience in which we grew together as a couple, as a family.

I’m glad our first evening was so special. Pretty quickly I realized out that I needed to work to protect these special moments as they popped up. As we started telling our family and friends, I realized that the world is packed with well meaning people, who want to make these moments their own. Further, as I was only the father, I seemed to be expendable in their eyes.

The perfect example of this type of incident occurred when we were visiting my wife’s sister. The two women have a mutual friend, she’s been a friend of theirs for years. While we were there, this friend rang the sister and completely independent of us, told her we want her to be present in the delivery room when our baby arrives. This was the last thing we wanted, we saw the delivery as a moment we would share alone. Yet this well meaning woman decided it was appropriate to organize for us what she thought was best, without even discussing it with us.

Another constant was the well meaning woman telling us that in her experience of giving birth, that medical advice we were receiving was incorrect. Yes sure, she had her children over 30 years ago, but nothing has changed and she knew better. Ridiculous. The really impressive part of these experiences though is that as the father to be, my opinions and participation in the discussion was not required. Apparently I was completely superfluous when it came to these decisions being made in my family.

The pregnancy of your first child really is a roller-coaster ride. You have such immense highs, indescribable moments you share with your partner. Moments you can hardly understand yet will never forget. For the first time you are bringing a new life into the world.

And then you have the pressures, feelings of self doubt, financial pressures, and feelings of being marginalized and pushed out of the way. This is why learning to trust your instincts becomes so important. You have to trust you’ll be able to provide for your family. You have to trust yourself so you know, when the well meaning woman enters the fray, the decisions you’ve made as a couple are the right decisions for your experience.

In talking to many other new fathers in my circle of friends, it seems as men, this is an issues we all have to face. The “well meaning woman” pops up everywhere, typically is the wife’s best friend, or mother, sometimes it can be your own mother. Its always someone who has already had children though, and someone who “knows better”.

Is there a well meaning woman causing issues in you family at the moment? The one thing I found when it happened to me was it was time for me to grow up. For the first time, I had to stand tall and protect my family. When these types of situation arise, there are two things you need to protect your family from.

Firstly, make sure these people do not interfere with your relationship with your doctor. Find a way to make them understand all medical opinions are off limits to them.

Secondly we found that we were second guessing the decisions we had mad as a couple because of all the naysayers telling us they’d do it differently. We gradually learned that that probably the most important things a couple can bring to their pregnancy and the birth of their children, are their own instincts. Other mothers’ instincts and ideas were great for their pregnancies and births, but every single one is unique. And there are only two people who know what is best for your unique pregnancy and that is you and your partner. No-one else’s opinion is appropriate. You need to protect your family from other people’s opinions undermining the trust you have in your own instincts and those of your spouse.

So, as a father to be, if you find yourself confronted by the “Well Meaning Woman”, you are certainly not the first, and will not be the last. Good luck with it and remember, even though these people will make you feel like you know less, 99% of the time your insticts will be spot on.

Easiest Way To Get Rid Of Stretch Marks And Keep Them At Bay http://www.9monthsandafter.com/easiest-way-to-get-rid-of-stretch-marks-and-keep-them-at-bay/ http://www.9monthsandafter.com/easiest-way-to-get-rid-of-stretch-marks-and-keep-them-at-bay/#comments Sun, 06 May 2012 15:17:56 +0000 Sean T Saunders http://www.9monthsandafter.com/easiest-way-to-get-rid-of-stretch-marks-and-keep-them-at-bay/

Anyone who has ever gained a considerable amount of weight quickly has probably observed unsightly stretch marks emerge on their body. This usually happens to expectant women, youngsters passing through the puberty growth spurt phase and body builders and those people who are taking special food supplements to add on weight. Pregnant women and young teenagers also have hormonal surges that induce the formation of stretch marks. Stretch marks are essentially linear scars which come about when the skin layer is stretched too far, too fast. This will cause tearing and other damage in the uppermost layers of the skin called the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous layers. When stretch marks first develop they may be purple or red in color however over time they will fade out to a white or silver shade. The best way to get rid of stretch marks is to make sure that they are taken care of as early as possible while these are still red or purple. Older stretch mark scars that have already faded are much more difficult to remove and get rid of.

When discussing the best way to get rid of stretch marks it is important to speak about different massage procedures. Massaging those stretch mark prone areas of your body can help in reducing and eliminating the scars in several ways. The pressure delivered to the skin layers in the course of the massage will break down and help to minimize any scar tissue which has accumulated near the stretch marks. Blood circulation is enhanced and stimulated by the body massage therapy. That encourages the blood flow to the skin cells and aids in the delivery of nutrients that build up and replace the skin proteins collagen and elastin that are main components in the skins elasticity and flexibility. The usage of a natural stretch mark cream during body massage intensifies the benefits.

The best way to get rid of stretch marks also involves the practice of exfoliating the superficial layer of the skin on a routine basis. Exfoliation works by abrading and removing a thin layer of the epidermis on the surface of the skin. This would help to remove the scarred tissue from stretch marks and cleans impurities such as dead skin cells. To exfoliate both a cleanser and an applicator are needed. The cleanser must be mildly abrasive such as oatmeal, baking soda, salt and sugar or should contain an ingredient like alpha hydroxy acid or tea tree oil that act as an exfoliating agent. Apply the cleanser with a mildly abrasive applicator for example a loofah, coarse sponge or even soft brush. You have to exfoliate your skin atleast two times daily and afterward apply an all natural anti-stretch mark skin cream for hydration.

You can find numerous effective stretch mark creams and skin lotions available which are based on all-natural and holistic ingredients. These topical creams and lotions represent the best way to get rid of stretch marks in a safe and inexpensive manner. Many of the most effective creams include substances that are naturally produced by the body such as collagen protein and elastin that keep skin layers flexible and supple. There are several other folk remedies that can be applied over the skin to help minimize and remove stretch marks. These include cocoa butter, shea butter, aloe vera, emu oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil and lemon juice.

You can use skin exfoliation, massage and stretch mark lotions to reduce and remove your stretch marks but the single best approach to get rid of stretch marks is for you to use a good quality holistic stretch mark lotion. Keep in mind that massage and skin exfoliation work better in combination with a natural stretch mark cream.
